Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I re-read this for the first time in a long time. I read the original about a year after it came out, and I loved it and gave to other family members. We were all hooked.

I love the movies very much and they are very faithful but it is texture and depth you can never really transfer to film. It is hard to convey the inner world of the characters. I found in reading it again that you can see how confused Harry is, how innocent and yet how brave with more understanding the books. Also their being quite British, the characters rarely show how they truly feel on the outside, you can see it in their eyes, because they are all wonderful actors, so you feel the depth and pain as you look into their eyes. But in a book, you feel it in your gut, it tears your heart out.

I lost my parents since I first read this book, I am not a child, and I was lucky to have my parents for a good majority of my life so I can’t compare to Harry’s pain. He never really knew his parents at all and slowly he gets to know them through others who did, through out the series that knowledge builds. He loves them even more deeply in the later books, but in this book, all he has ever known is their loss. And the ugly untrue rantings of a jealous sister and her cruel idiotic husband. These two people (“The worst muggles in the world!”) abused this baby for 10 years. He hadn’t known love since his parents died, so it is a miracle that he is full of love, kindness, and thoughtfulness. His parents are a part him despite his cruel upbringing from his horrid Aunt and Uncle. And the abuse he suffered from a spoiled, arrogant, egotistical bully of a cousin.

I love so many the characters first and foremost Harry, Ron and Hermione. I am the most like Hermione Granger I think, but because I am book worm and was always different. Still am. I remember only a few years ago a colleague from work and I went out to lunch. We had time so we went shopping and I picked out a necklace, she tilted her head and said, “It is like you, different.” Left handed compliments…sigh, they are something I learned to read early, so out of the three of them, I think I understand Hermione best.

But my favorite has always been Hagrid. He was just a sweet teddy bear, and I have always adored that kind of character. Sweet, kind, a gentle giant, full of a quiet hard earned wisdom, (though he was not book smart, he was life smart) I just adore him.

The Bridesmaids ~ Inside the Privileged World of Grace Kelly and Six Intimate FriendsThe Bridesmaids ~ Inside the Privileged World of Grace Kelly and Six Intimate Friends by Judith Balaban Quine
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is second time I read this book, (sort of trend because of moving and finding books as I slowly unpack.) I was in my twenties the first time I read it and rather innocent. I was more interested in the glamour and the movie stars then in the real lives.

Now as I mature women I read it very differently. With life experience I actually took in thing I don’t think my younger self could have even understood. Some of the lessons I learned from this book was very much needed. It made me feel more understanding and better about my own up and downs and my losses.

Grace was a beautiful, accomplished, very intelligent woman, she had a full life that contributed a lot in several ways. As much I enjoyed her many and varied accomplishments I really learned from her mistakes. It was a lot to take in.

Laughs, Luck...and Lucy: How I Came to Create the Most Popular Sitcom of All Time (with Laughs, Luck…and Lucy: How I Came to Create the Most Popular Sitcom of All Time by Jess Oppenheimer
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I interviewed Gregg Oppenheimer for my show Chatting With Sherri. It was a charming chat about his dad Jess Oppenheimer and Gregg’s play about Lucy called; “I Love Lucy; A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Sitcom.” So as research I began to read this book.

I truly enjoyed it because it was full of information not just about I Love Lucy, which I love but radio shows with Jack Benny, Fanny Brice, Fred Astaire and ultimately Lucille Ball. It was about the life story of Jess Oppenheimer and his memories of the period of Live Radio which was like catnip to me.

In case you can’t tell I loved this book and in it are recording from My Favorite Wife and I Love Lucy that you can’t hear anywhere else. Definitely worth a read 🙂

By the way, the play I mentioned is also going to be a radio show, isn’t that cool? I can hardly wait!

Aghatha Christie : Evil Under The SunAghatha Christie : Evil Under The Sun by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Hi, the way it is put into the system, they put the author’s name wrong and I just wanted to let you know, I know her name is; Agatha Christie 🙂 (But this is the edition I own, so I left it under here.)

This is the third time I have read the novel. It’s been a while and I am a very visual person. I see books as I read them. And Agatha Christie is excellent at painting a picture with her words. Maybe that is why her work translates so easily to film.

I have seen both the Peter Ustinov and David Suchet versions of the story. It’s funny what sticks in your mind, some things from the films completely wipe out what happens in the novel. For instance the summing up, it was completely different in both films from the novel. Where they take place, who he talks to and what he says in the novel is completely different, though the puzzle is of course is the same. I love a good movie and though they were both very different from what she wrote I enjoyed them both. You just don’t realize how your mind juggles things till you re-read it again later.

I don’t want to give away any of the plot but it is a fun “who done it,” with amazing characters. Like all her books, my favorite part in the book that does not happen at all in the movie is very small but important. It will not affect the mystery but it tells you how both Poirot thinks and his creator; He is helping Mrs. Gardener with a puzzle, putting the cut out pieces into place and that act in itself actually helped him figure out the puzzle of the crime. To me it says a lot.

Imagine living in the center of Los Angeles, not in Hollywood, but instead walking among pools of sticky tar. Herbivores and carnivores alike meet their fate as they are crushed and trampled by predators. Look down into the pits to gaze at their fossil remains. Watch scientists at work in “The Fishbowl,” cleaning and categorizing archaeological finds. Then marvel at reconstructed skeletons of mastodons, camels, and giant sloths. Stim by Kevin Berry

Stim by [Berry, Kevin]

When an adolescent Kevin Berry handed in a 50,000 word murder mystery for his high school English assignment, his long-suffering teacher accepted the stack of papers with poorly masked horror. Today, Berry’s work is generally met with a stronger reception, including multiple independent writing awards and glowing critical reviews.
Berry’s fiction is known for its high stakes and dramatic action, but his stories are drawn from his own life experience. In 2010 and 2011, Berry lived through the devastating earthquakes that struck Christchurch in New Zealand, forever changing how residents saw their city. His personal struggle with Bipolar Disorder and Asperger’s Syndrome inspired the characters in his novels Stim and Kaleidoscope, described as powerful and authentic representations.
When Berry isn’t raising his two sons, reading other indie authors or working as a copy editor, the writer can be found hunched over his laptop, face scrunched and fingers flying well into the early hours.

Florida Gothic

Florida Gothic (The "Gothic" Series Book 1) by [Szereto, Mitzi]
by Mitzi Szereto
Stuck in a twilight world between life and death…
A hit-and-run driver leaves Ernesto Martinez to die by a Miami canal. Then an alligator
comes along to finish the job. Being dead gives Ernesto plenty of time to think. He
thinks about his wife, taken from him too soon by illness. He thinks about his daughter,
the victim of a drunk driver. He thinks about his death as he watches his body slowly
decompose. Most of all, he thinks about injustice. The meth head ex-con living in the
Everglades. The judge enjoying retirement on the Gulf Coast. The son of a Colombian
drug kingpin partying in South Beach. These men care nothing for the pain they’ve
caused. But they’ll soon know what it is to feel pain. Set against the sweltering bug-
infested backdrop of South Florida, Florida Gothic weaves a darkly unnerving and
visceral tale of sex, drugs, crime and vengeance.

City of Devils

City of Devils by [Robinson, Justin]

World War II was only the beginning. When the Night War ravages America, turning it into a country of monsters, humans become a downtrodden minority. Nick Moss is the only human private eye in town, and he’s on the trail of a missing city councilor. With monsters trying to turn him – or, better yet, simply kill him – he’s got to watch his back while trying to find his man. Or mummy, as the case may be.

Once, it was the City of Angels. But now, Los Angeles is the City of Devils…and Nick has a devil of a job to do.

Coldheart

San Francisco is on the edge of a blizzard, the first in a hundred years. A cannibal killer stalks the streets. A rash of abductions targets people seemingly at random. A city falling into chaos.

Chris Black sees the connection. On the trail of a missing woman, he uncovers the delicate threads uniting the disparate mysteries. But he is mentally ill and all of it could be the product of his diseased mind. Balancing the fog of medication with his descent into madness, he struggles to remain lucid in the face of horror.

Delving into a mystery that might be of his own making, he discovers a secret world. A world where women become serpents, the very ground can be his deadliest enemy, a world of the blackest magic. He has found the edges of something older than he can imagine, something that can change the fabric of reality.

Hounds of the Underworld Lee Murray

blends mystery, near-future noir and horror. Set in New Zealand it’s the product of a collaboration by two Kiwi authors, one with Chinese heritage and the other Māori. This debut book in The Path of Ra series offers compelling new voices and an exotic perspective on the detective drama.

On the verge of losing her laboratory, her savings, and all respect for herself, Pandora (Penny) Yee lands her first contract as scientific consult to the police department. And with seventeen murder cases on the go, the surly inspector is happy to leave her to it. Only she’s going to need to get around, and that means her slightly unhinged adopted brother, Matiu, will be doing the driving. But something about the case spooks Matiu, something other than the lack of a body in the congealing pool of blood in the locked room or that odd little bowl.

Dan Rabarts is an award-winning short fiction author and editor, recipient of New Zealand’s Sir Julius Vogel Award for Best New Talent in 2014, and the Paul Haines Award for Long Fiction as part of the Australian Shadows Awards in 2017. His science fiction, dark fantasy and horror short stories have been published in numerous venues around the world, including Beneath Ceaseless Skies, The Mammoth Book of Dieselpunk, and StarShipSofa. Together with Lee Murray, he co-edited the anthologies Baby Teeth – Bite-sized Tales of Terror, winner of the 2014 SJV for Best Collected Work and the 2014 Australian Shadows Award for Best Edited Work, and At the Edge, a collection of Antipodean dark fiction. Lee Murray is a multi-award-winning writer and editor of fantasy, science fiction, and horror, including the bestselling Into the Mist (Cohesion Press), which World Horror Master Michael B. She is proud to have co-edited six anthologies of speculative fiction, one of which won her an Australian Shadows Award for Best Edited Work (with Dan Rabarts) in 2014. Her latest title, Hounds of the Underworld, is a supernatural crime-noir written in collaboration with Dan Rabarts and published by Raw Dog Screaming Press. Lee lives with her family in the Land of the Long White Cloud, where she conjures up stories for readers of all ages from her office on the porch. www.leemurray.info

This is not a secret I love the theater, and I love that there is a day to celebrate it. I love the theater to go to and to perform in, I love radio theater, (which I take part in) i love community theater, (which I also take part in.) I love going to professional theater which I have been going to since I was 7 years old (I saw Porgy and Bess at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion with my class.) I have seen plays in LA, Chicago, San Diego and London. My parents went to Broadway for their honeymoon, it is a family tradition.
