Xena; Their Courage Changed Our World and interviews…

Sherri’s Playhouse presented the radio play; Dimness  :     http://tobtr.com/11788126  ! This was a combned show with the interview, it went very well to some excellent reviews. I am reprising it with just the play, it is very short but people might like that fact; on 9/10/20 at 7pm pt; http://tobtr.com/11807122

I am sorry about all the delays on Sherri’s Playhouse, they are due to the pandemic and sickness, (not covid but something debilitating.)  We will be back we have a bunch of great stuff in store for you, so hold on to your hats!

Yesterday was the 25th anniversary of one my favorite shows.  Thank you to the creators, writers, directors, actors, cinematographers, make up and hair, stunt people and every single person that created this gem. Know that your appreciate and loved. Speaking of that;

On Sept 8th at 1pm pacific time I’m delighted to present this amazingly fun chat with Mary D Brooks about Xena; Their Courage Changed Our World ;  http://tobtr.com/11803506  !  Mary and I met at Xena Convention many years ago, we both had a book signing, It was my very first one and I was nervous, I sat next to Mary who put me right at ease joking and chatting with me and the authors and the people asking to have us sign our books. It was one of those special moments that forged a lifetime freindship. That is what this book is all about, how the show touched the fans. There are people in it who took part in the show like Steven L Sears who wrote in the book but he is writing about us fans too. This show changed many lives for the better, through friendship, charity and inspiration. And really isn’t that what art is all about?

Including the classic The Time Machine with the great Rod Taylor.  I love his stories, that is why I can’t wait for the next part of Lady Sherlock;   http://tobtr.com/11788124

The Woman on the Orient ExpressThe Woman on the Orient Express by Lindsay Jayne Ashford
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I didn’t read the previews, I had no idea what it was about except it was Agatha Christie on the Orient Express. So as a lover of Agatha Christie I had to read it. I really enjoyed it, I loved how she wove her real life with this fictional account. The results of reading it, I picked up one of the books inspired in real life to her trip to the dig site. My only critique is that the dates are wildly off on one of the real life people, I won’t tell who because it will spoil the plot, but he is revealed at the end of the book.

Well, i haven’t posted for a while so I thought I’d bring you on a ride through some time travel.

A Presumption of Death (Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane, #2)A Presumption of Death by Jill Paton Walsh

I have enjoyed all the books of the series written by Jill Paton Walsh but I have to say this is the weakest one. I figured out who did it about halfway through the book. Unlike Gaudy Night, where Harriet was very interesting through the first half of the book and in this one I truly missed both Peter and Bunter. Once they show up things pick up and it become very enjoyable but it is more then half way through and that was really hard on the reader.

I won’t tell how they showed up or where or why because that would be spoilers but they were very enjoyable reunions. I do like the way that Ms Walsh writes all the characters she really understands them and I feel that Dorothy Sayers is there in spirit but I am sorry of the books she had written this book is not my favorite because of the plot and really the lack of the zing in the story line. (I do love all the others she wrote so I am being extremely honest here.)

Death by Water (Phryne Fisher, #15)Death by Water by Kerry Greenwood

I really enjoyed this story, despite the fact that only Dot was with her, Phryne really was able to do her thing. Poor Dot really got it this time, but she took on the chin helped with the mystery. Phryne was pretty wonderful, how she put all the pieces together of this complex mystery, even Agatha Christie did her part to help her solve it. (In book form, she wasn’t on the cruise.)

I love the cruise feel of the story, (especially right now during lockdown,) I really enjoyed how she figured out who she could trust and who was involved. I loved Cec’s neice, she is a cutie.

The only thing I really questioned was that they had lifeboat drill by going in the lifeboats and sailing out on the lifeboats. Really? Did they do that? When I went on a cruise (it was in the 1980’s) all they did was make sure that everyone was there, everyone had their life jackets and they read a boring but important procedural guide. Other then that I could feel it being like a cruise, it was very well done.

Gaudy Night (Lord Peter Wimsey, #12)Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers

I am not sure how many times I have read this book but it never gets old. It is the first book to introduce me to Oxford in such glorious detail. I have been hungry for more info ever since, that was a long time ago. I didn’t get to visit Oxford when I went to the UK, I had little time but I wish I did.

It also finally gives me the ending I wanted between Peter and Harriet, yes there was a tangle of a mystery that they had to solve and it was a mind bender of chore. But the romance really was tested in this one, and I enjoyed both the emotion and the intellect involved in it.

In fact I think it is fascinating that we are still facing this question of how a woman should be in the 21st century. It is such a strange thing, no one questions if a man can be both heart and mind, even though it is just as much a battle (sometimes more so) for a man as it is for a woman. It poses some questions that still ring true today.

As usual Dorothy Sayers pulls your brain apart in several different directions and throws in languages that most people don’t know like Latin and Greek. At least I understood the French. The world has changed I remember the first time I went to the library to get the translations and now I just plug them into Google.

Sayers challenges you but she gives you the pleasure of a good hunt, with some lovely romance thrown in. Very much worth it, especially with the world as it is right now.

Murder and Mendelssohn (Phryne Fisher, #20)Murder and Mendelssohn by Kerry Greenwood

I really enjoyed this adventure, it was fun getting to see Phryne take on a Sherlock Holmes type and really showing him that he had it all wrong. We meet her dear friend from the war who she comforts and is there for when he needs her. We get to find about her spy days and meet some of the spooks of her past. Of course, the framework is the choir, which of course Phryne joins to figure out who was the killer. And it was lovely to have so much of Jack Robinson in it, her favorite detective and her dear friend in the books. (In this book more then others that I have read he is closer to the Jack Robinson of the TV series. Especially when it comes to food.)

Book Reviews;

Out on a LimbOut on a Limb by Shirley MacLaine
It’s funny, I have read this book so many times that my copy is dogeared, not by folding down the edge ( I was taught never to do that,) but by being read over and over. I still find it fascinating. I had no idea that some of the people were composites, I always wondered what happened to David. He sort of disappeared in the mountains in the end. I just hoped he made it home alright, I found out later that he was actually several people, so I guess he did.

I know the focus of the book was Shirley and Gerry, (I later found out who he was too, and it was two different men. (at different times.) ) but I found the interaction with Bella Abzug and David much more compelling. And because I was very interested in my own spiritual search when I was in my early twenties, it was my go to book about trance channeling, and other pursuit of spiritual understanding. I was actually in college at the time and my adviser found me reading it a bit worrying, but since I was completely devoted to my education, she put it down to youthful pursuits. Hehehehe.

Well it has been years and I found the romance part a bit difficult to get through. I would have to push myself to read it. Not because of any judgmental feelings but I just wasn’t that interested in that part. (I have had my own life experiences now, so I am not as transfixed as I was when I was a much more innocent 23 year old.) I found some the theories still hold up. And others do not. I still find both David and Bella much more important relationships for Shirley and something that I still learn from. I think that my need to read the book was because of what she had in those friendships and how they were guides (David) and supportive (Bella) to her pursuits and needs. And that is why I gave the book 5 stars. It is the most beautiful part and the part that stands the test of time.

Southern Attraction- The College YearsSouthern Attraction- The College Years by Tracy Kauffman
Southern Attraction-The College Years continues the journey with Heather Brandon and her amazing boyfriend Jake as they go off to college. Heather struggles with insecurities of her past while trying to find a peaceful life. She had dealt with enough heartache to last a lifetime, including losing her parents, and surviving a tornado that ripped apart her new home. She wants Jake to settle down so they can enjoy their life together. Now all she wants to do is live a life of happiness and not worry about the man she loves.

I received the book from the author for an honest review.

The story is very good, the relationship between Jake and Heather showed that you can overcome the obstacles when you believe in each other. PTSD is very real, important and the sufferer’s torment about past happenings, very traumatic. It is also an honest portrayal. It is with knowledge about both the people who suffer from it and those who live with the people who suffer from it and what they go through. It is an important issue that needs to be understood by the public.

I do have to admit that this was a hard book for me to read, the characters were so distant. I know that angst is compelling but there should be some relief, some comic moments. Humor is always a good way for people to survive torment. It is why there is always humor in a thriller, the audience can only take so much. It would make so much easier for the reader.

I do recommend the book, it is a well done depiction of people who love each other, finding their way.

Book Review;

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter, #3)Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
I have to admit this has always been my favorite of the series. I think because of two of the new characters and what they mean to Harry. I also love how Hermione has grown up and she really is becoming her own person. Of course like any preteen she makes major mistakes like taking too many classes, but that just makes you love her more and relate to her more. Poor Harry really goes through the ringer and I appreciate J.K Rowling allows this young man to be competent but make mistakes and be downright confused. I love how he reacts in a certain part when Hermione takes him on a certain trip, (sometimes it is really hard to avoid spoilers.) Ron has always been us to me. He says what the audience would say and reacts the way we do too. It’s hard not to love them. This is the story that you see a glimpse of the adults they will become. I adore Lupin, he is very real to me. Like my best teachers, the ones that always made me think.

Anything else I say would give the game away, but it is my favorite and an exquisite story.

Five Little Pigs (Hercule Poirot, #25)Five Little Pigs by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Five Little Pigs is one of my favorite stories. I first saw the David Suchet version on TV, and just fell in love with it because though it takes place in the 1930’s, the action of the piece takes place in one of my favorite eras the 1920’s. It is a fascinating look at how people see a catastrophic event differently.

There are differences of course between the book and the show. The name of daughter is different and several other little things, especially the way it ends but essentially it is the same story. I find how she has the same story again and again and again, 5 times really, and each is different because each person who tells it is different and see is in their own way.

I also find it fascinating how an open and closed case changes when you listen to the personal versions because you see things that of course the lawyers would never have even have thought to ask of each witness. And several incredibly important facts are not apart of the trial.

I won’t tell any more because I don’t want to give away the plot. But I can see why this was one of Agatha Christie’s favorites. Such a complex and intricate plot. Brilliant.

Partners in Crime (Tommy and Tuppence #2)Partners in Crime by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I do not have an accurate count of how many times I have read this wonderful romp. It is my go to book for a troubled heart. I really defy anyone who is down in the mouth, to read one of the short stories in this and not to be touched or smiling at the antics of Tuppence and Tommy. One of my favorites.

A Murder Is Announced (Miss Marple, #5)A Murder Is Announced by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have always loved Miss Marple, her sweetness and kindness radiates from her, but her intelligence and need to find the truth drives her. Have you ever wished that a detective was real, sometimes when there is a horrible crime I hope for a little old lady who really knows what makes the world tick.

This story takes place in a small village that is full of retired people and young relatives and workers staying there too. In the local rag an announcement send all the neighbors running agog to see if what is announced, is true. A murder.

So read about the small village and how Miss Marple and Inspector Craddock solve this baffling who done it.

Agatha Christie as always so many layers that it is like trying to figure out how to re-weave a sweater. Give a go!

Come, Tell Me How You LiveCome, Tell Me How You Live by Agatha Christie Mallowan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is such a fun book, I read it quickly. I love learning how the archaeology worked back then and the way they explored Syria and how much fun and adventure they had.

Now to start with the tough stuff; If you read books written long ago, one thing you have to learn is to accept that they will be filled with prejudices of the time. I don’t think that Agatha was really prejudiced, she truly loved Syria and the people there, but her way of expressing herself was of that time. If you read her novels you see how they change, they become more understanding, the way she describes people becomes more modern and less prejudiced. I believe that was because of her travels and her love of learning about new people and new things. It is a lesson I learned from traveling with my parents and then on my own, if you travel open-hearted with a sense of adventure, you learn about other people and cultures and you become a more rounded person.

I see a lot of evidence of it in Agatha Christie’s writings. And I really enjoyed seeing the way Syria was way back then before the “IS” got a hold of it, and destroyed it. (which breaks my heart, I kept looking up the sites that Max was working on, to see if they were still there, most had been destroyed or mostly destroyed. His life’s work and the work of four generations of archaeologists destroyed. History does not just belong to one culture, it belongs to everyone, it is part of the historical record of the human species. To destroy it is just utterly heartless. A crime against humanity.

Now to the fun part; I loved her humor, how she made fun of herself and everyone else. The glimpse of the marriage between her and Max. The beauty of the places she went to, the marigolds, the wonderful clothes of the Kurd women, the sweetness of the people, the crazy scrapes the workers got into. The great descriptions of the archaeology at the time. (I have a lesser degree in archaeology and it was one of the reasons I really, really wanted to read this book, that plus my love of Agatha and my curiosity about Max.) The way the finds were split between the expositions and the people of the country they were in. Pretty fair really. (Not like the old days in the 1800’s where people just took stuff for their universities and museums without the permission of the country or the people. ) It is a fascinating read and I highly recommend it.
