A Presumption of Death (Lord Peter Wimsey/Harriet Vane, #2)A Presumption of Death by Jill Paton Walsh

I have enjoyed all the books of the series written by Jill Paton Walsh but I have to say this is the weakest one. I figured out who did it about halfway through the book. Unlike Gaudy Night, where Harriet was very interesting through the first half of the book and in this one I truly missed both Peter and Bunter. Once they show up things pick up and it become very enjoyable but it is more then half way through and that was really hard on the reader.

I won’t tell how they showed up or where or why because that would be spoilers but they were very enjoyable reunions. I do like the way that Ms Walsh writes all the characters she really understands them and I feel that Dorothy Sayers is there in spirit but I am sorry of the books she had written this book is not my favorite because of the plot and really the lack of the zing in the story line. (I do love all the others she wrote so I am being extremely honest here.)

Origin (Robert Langdon, #5)Origin by Dan Brown

This was a really great book but it was also a very troubling book. It was a fun adventure with places I have never even thought about visiting and artists I have never heard of, that part of it was so much fun! I really loved the characters in this book and Robert Langdon’s relationships with them. I love art but like Robert I have been a fan of few modern artists, there are some, because I feel I understand them, but to be truly honest some I will never understand. He introduced to me places I have never been, like Spain, and literature I had never even heard of, as always it was a page turner and it was exciting. And that part of it was so much fun!

The way I feel about Religion and Science is very close to Robert’s that they care deeply about the world around us but they are just going about it differently. I am open to AI, and I found Winston very charming and an interesting character. I am not going to spoil it, but I found parts of the book very disturbing, and I stayed up nights since I read it worrying over it. I am that type of person and I really appreciate Dan Brown opening the conversation and bringing up these very, very important issues especially at this time. I think this is his best book and yet as I said before I felt it is very disturbing at the same time.

More Than Love: An Intimate Portrait of My Mother, Natalie WoodMore Than Love: An Intimate Portrait of My Mother, Natalie Wood by Natasha Gregson Wagner

I have loved Natalie Wood since I was a small child. I saw her on talk shows in the 70’s with Robert Wagner who I also adore, or by herself. She was always funny, intelligent and adorable. She was my favorite actress as kid (I wanted to be an actress, not many brunettes for a brunette who wanted to be an actress to look up to, she was also extremely talented.) My favorite movies are Cash McCall and Love With a Proper Stranger. She was also great in comedy and I adored her in Sex and The Single Girl and Bob, Carol, Ted and Alice. In other words I am a fan.

When Natalie was going to be in Anastasia in LA at the Music Center I was so excited, I squealed when we got the postcard advertising it. (I still have it somewhere.) I lived at home, I was going to college and working but I knew I did not have enough money to go to the play and pay my bills, My Dad promised to get them for the whole family when they came on the market.

Of course that was not to be. I was so stunned when I heard what happened, and heart broken. It is hard to explain, I never met her, or even got a glimpse of her in person.

When all the speculation started with her sister Lana I was shocked, it was obvious she didn’t like Robert Wagner in her book, (which I did read) but she never accused him of anything like she did later. When she accuse him, I was very angry. I am a life long murder mystery fan and what she and the ship’s captain said happened, had way too many holes in it, it made no sense.

I was so excited to read Natasha Gregson Wagner book, I saw the advertisement for it after I saw her HBO special, Natalie Wood, What Remains Behind. I loved all the stuff about Natalie’s life in the documentary, her career and family life. It was beautiful. At the end, I was nodding my head and agreeing with her and the people she was interviewing, they knew best, everyone else in blogs and podcasts are just speculating. The biggest thing for me was that Christopher Walken and Robert Wagner didn’t really like each other and were not friends, why would Christopher back him up, if it was a lie, so I knew that all this fodder was just trumped up stuff, to make money. So sad. And unfair.

So I bought the book, it was very good, it is very hard to write the dark side of your life, the hard stuff for you to grapple with and to do it for the public, wow! I think Nastasha did a great job and she obviously researched her Mom’s life very thoroughly. She is so lucky to have so much, I treasure the pieces I have my parents, I don’t have as much as she does but the bits and pieces are precious. I felt so bad as I read how she had desperately wanted to keep her parents home, that she was scared something would happen to them and then when it did, her life just spiraled.

I also noticed as I read all the things that Lana had wrong, dates that things happened, the bust of James Dean disappearing, (obliviously not true, it was right there in storage,) even what Natalie was wearing on that last Thanksgiving. Also Natasha explaining her attitude to two tiny kids who just lost their Mom, her sister was cold and cruel. It made me realize her book was not true at all.

I love the happy ending for Natalie’s kids though, they deserve it. And I really hope people stop talking about her passing and focus on what great actress she was, maybe even have a Natalie Wood Film Festival. That would be so cool.

Thank you Natasha, from one daughter to another.

Gaudy Night (Lord Peter Wimsey, #12)Gaudy Night by Dorothy L. Sayers

I am not sure how many times I have read this book but it never gets old. It is the first book to introduce me to Oxford in such glorious detail. I have been hungry for more info ever since, that was a long time ago. I didn’t get to visit Oxford when I went to the UK, I had little time but I wish I did.

It also finally gives me the ending I wanted between Peter and Harriet, yes there was a tangle of a mystery that they had to solve and it was a mind bender of chore. But the romance really was tested in this one, and I enjoyed both the emotion and the intellect involved in it.

In fact I think it is fascinating that we are still facing this question of how a woman should be in the 21st century. It is such a strange thing, no one questions if a man can be both heart and mind, even though it is just as much a battle (sometimes more so) for a man as it is for a woman. It poses some questions that still ring true today.

As usual Dorothy Sayers pulls your brain apart in several different directions and throws in languages that most people don’t know like Latin and Greek. At least I understood the French. The world has changed I remember the first time I went to the library to get the translations and now I just plug them into Google.

Sayers challenges you but she gives you the pleasure of a good hunt, with some lovely romance thrown in. Very much worth it, especially with the world as it is right now.

It’s funny, I have read this book so many times that my copy is dogeared, not by folding down the edge ( I was taught never to do that,) but by being read over and over. I still find it fascinating. I had no idea that some of the people were composites, I always wondered what happened to David. He sort of disappeared in the mountains in the end. I just hoped he made it home alright, I found out later that he was actually several people, so I guess he did.

I know the focus of the book was Shirley and Gerry, (I later found out who he was too, and it was two different men. (at different times.) ) but I found the interaction with Bella Abzug and David much more compelling. And because I was very interested in my own spiritual search when I was in my early twenties, it was my go to book about trance channeling, and other pursuit of spiritual understanding. I was actually in college at the time and my adviser found me reading it a bit worrying, but since I was completely devoted to my education, she put it down to youthful pursuits. Hehehehe.

Well it has been years and I found the romance part a bit difficult to get through. I would have to push myself to read it. Not because of any judgmental feelings but I just wasn’t that interested in that part. (I have had my own life experiences now, so I am not as transfixed as I was when I was a much more innocent 23 year old.) I found some the theories still hold up. And others do not. I still find both David and Bella much more important relationships for Shirley and something that I still learn from. I think that my need to read the book was because of what she had in those friendships and how they were guides (David) and supportive (Bella) to her pursuits and needs. And that is why I gave the book 5 stars. It is the most beautiful part and the part that stands the test of time.

Southern Attraction- The College YearsSouthern Attraction- The College Years by Tracy Kauffman
Southern Attraction-The College Years continues the journey with Heather Brandon and her amazing boyfriend Jake as they go off to college. Heather struggles with insecurities of her past while trying to find a peaceful life. She had dealt with enough heartache to last a lifetime, including losing her parents, and surviving a tornado that ripped apart her new home. She wants Jake to settle down so they can enjoy their life together. Now all she wants to do is live a life of happiness and not worry about the man she loves.

I received the book from the author for an honest review.

The story is very good, the relationship between Jake and Heather showed that you can overcome the obstacles when you believe in each other. PTSD is very real, important and the sufferer’s torment about past happenings, very traumatic. It is also an honest portrayal. It is with knowledge about both the people who suffer from it and those who live with the people who suffer from it and what they go through. It is an important issue that needs to be understood by the public.

I do have to admit that this was a hard book for me to read, the characters were so distant. I know that angst is compelling but there should be some relief, some comic moments. Humor is always a good way for people to survive torment. It is why there is always humor in a thriller, the audience can only take so much. It would make so much easier for the reader.

I do recommend the book, it is a well done depiction of people who love each other, finding their way.

Book Review;

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter, #3)Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
I have to admit this has always been my favorite of the series. I think because of two of the new characters and what they mean to Harry. I also love how Hermione has grown up and she really is becoming her own person. Of course like any preteen she makes major mistakes like taking too many classes, but that just makes you love her more and relate to her more. Poor Harry really goes through the ringer and I appreciate J.K Rowling allows this young man to be competent but make mistakes and be downright confused. I love how he reacts in a certain part when Hermione takes him on a certain trip, (sometimes it is really hard to avoid spoilers.) Ron has always been us to me. He says what the audience would say and reacts the way we do too. It’s hard not to love them. This is the story that you see a glimpse of the adults they will become. I adore Lupin, he is very real to me. Like my best teachers, the ones that always made me think.

Anything else I say would give the game away, but it is my favorite and an exquisite story.

Two new 4 star ratings for my novel Murder Inc.!

New Review;

Hercule Poirot's Christmas (Hercule Poirot, #20)

Hercule Poirot’s Christmas by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It’s funny how despite the fact you have read a novel before, if you have seen an adaption on TV it overrides the memory of the written word. This is not the first time that my memory of the series has wiped out my memory of the book.

Though I loved the adaption with David Suchet, I love the novel more. It’s richer, has more characters and they are all quite different then the people in the adaption. (I do recommend the TV adaption though it is exquisitely done and perfect for this time of year, despite the murder.)

The characters of David and Hilda were taken out of the show completely which is really sad because I really like them a lot. They are really interesting and there is a lot there that to adds to the tension and the plot.

Also I love that the romance that lights up again between Alfred and Lydia, so sweet.

I knew who the murderer was of course from my first read and the adaption but it was done in such a way that I questioned my memory till Poirot revealed it.

Superb novel, love Dame Agatha as always.

Agatha ChristieAgatha Christie by Gillian Gill
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I enjoyed this very much, an interesting thoughtful portrait of a very complex lady who wanted no one, to really know what was going on inside her mind. Can’t blame her really.

I found the insights very striking and unlike some of the reviews I did not at all find it at all boring. It was very interesting, indeed.

I thought how she used the Mary Westmacott novels to explain the inner working of Agatha’s mind quite well though out and it was not the first time, Agatha’s own daughter said if you really wanted to understand her mother, you need to read the Mary Westmacott novels.

While I didn’t at mind that the author Gillian Gill, gave the plot-lines and outcomes in those stories since I have not read them and don’t mind spoilers, I was stunned that she gave way not only the plot-lines but the murderers in Agatha’s mysteries. I am a huge Christie fan, which is why I read this and yet I have to admit I have not read all her books, and for her to give away the killer, not in one book, but in several books was shocking, and quite disappointing.

Otherwise an excellent biography.

The Mysterious Mr. Quin (Harley Quin, #1)The Mysterious Mr. Quin by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I have always have had a mystical side to my nature. I love magic and mystery. So a perfect series of stories, (which according to Agatha Christie, was never meant to be a series,) is the Harley Quin short stories. You never know what your going to get when you read them. Romance? Adventure? Mystery? Scandal? Death? It has all of it, very charmingly told through the eyes of an older man who has not really lived life but observed it, Mr. Satterhwaite. Until he meets the mysterious Mr. Quin, he really feels that is his lot in life to observe and listen. He knew a lot of important people, appreciated beauty, listened to some of the greatest stories by just being a good listener, but he had never really lived a life that he felt was complete. Until one day he met Mr. Quin and through his encouragement (though Mr. Quin denied it,) he discovered he could be part of the drama, not just a part of it, but a pivotal part.

I won’t tell you what the dramas are, you have to read the book.

My Book Reviews;

The Harlequin Tea Set and Other Stories (Hercule Poirot, #44)The Harlequin Tea Set and Other Stories by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I only knew one of the nine short stories in this anthology, The Mystery of The Spanish Chest which I had read in another anthology of Poirot stories. I am not horror person so I was a not a fan of those but I thought The Actress was really clever, I liked it. The House of Dreams was utterly heartbreaking. I loved The Lonely God! So sweet. Manx Gold was a lot of fun, I love that she created a real life treasure hunt, and created a story full of clues, see if you can guess where everything is before you get to the end where all the explanations are, I couldn’t. Within a Wall was also heartbreaking. I adore Harley Quinn so I was delighted to find I had never read this story, and it is really sweet and a bit scary, just like Mr. Quinn himself.

I totally recommend it 🙂

An AutobiographyAn Autobiography by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is about the third time I read her autobiography and it is interesting that I pluck new things out of it each time. This time I recognized two characters from one of my favorite books that I just kind of glossed over the last time.

Also I really enjoyed her view of travel and the middle east. It makes me sort of sad because some of those very sites, that her husband worked so hard on were destroyed recently. And she brings all the beauty and people of the region to life for the reader.

As your read her novels you see her grow and change with her experiences, and as you read her autobiography you see where that growth came from.

Excellent read.
