Murder and Mendelssohn (Phryne Fisher, #20)Murder and Mendelssohn by Kerry Greenwood

I really enjoyed this adventure, it was fun getting to see Phryne take on a Sherlock Holmes type and really showing him that he had it all wrong. We meet her dear friend from the war who she comforts and is there for when he needs her. We get to find about her spy days and meet some of the spooks of her past. Of course, the framework is the choir, which of course Phryne joins to figure out who was the killer. And it was lovely to have so much of Jack Robinson in it, her favorite detective and her dear friend in the books. (In this book more then others that I have read he is closer to the Jack Robinson of the TV series. Especially when it comes to food.)

Book Reviews;

Out on a LimbOut on a Limb by Shirley MacLaine
It’s funny, I have read this book so many times that my copy is dogeared, not by folding down the edge ( I was taught never to do that,) but by being read over and over. I still find it fascinating. I had no idea that some of the people were composites, I always wondered what happened to David. He sort of disappeared in the mountains in the end. I just hoped he made it home alright, I found out later that he was actually several people, so I guess he did.

I know the focus of the book was Shirley and Gerry, (I later found out who he was too, and it was two different men. (at different times.) ) but I found the interaction with Bella Abzug and David much more compelling. And because I was very interested in my own spiritual search when I was in my early twenties, it was my go to book about trance channeling, and other pursuit of spiritual understanding. I was actually in college at the time and my adviser found me reading it a bit worrying, but since I was completely devoted to my education, she put it down to youthful pursuits. Hehehehe.

Well it has been years and I found the romance part a bit difficult to get through. I would have to push myself to read it. Not because of any judgmental feelings but I just wasn’t that interested in that part. (I have had my own life experiences now, so I am not as transfixed as I was when I was a much more innocent 23 year old.) I found some the theories still hold up. And others do not. I still find both David and Bella much more important relationships for Shirley and something that I still learn from. I think that my need to read the book was because of what she had in those friendships and how they were guides (David) and supportive (Bella) to her pursuits and needs. And that is why I gave the book 5 stars. It is the most beautiful part and the part that stands the test of time.

Southern Attraction- The College YearsSouthern Attraction- The College Years by Tracy Kauffman
Southern Attraction-The College Years continues the journey with Heather Brandon and her amazing boyfriend Jake as they go off to college. Heather struggles with insecurities of her past while trying to find a peaceful life. She had dealt with enough heartache to last a lifetime, including losing her parents, and surviving a tornado that ripped apart her new home. She wants Jake to settle down so they can enjoy their life together. Now all she wants to do is live a life of happiness and not worry about the man she loves.

I received the book from the author for an honest review.

The story is very good, the relationship between Jake and Heather showed that you can overcome the obstacles when you believe in each other. PTSD is very real, important and the sufferer’s torment about past happenings, very traumatic. It is also an honest portrayal. It is with knowledge about both the people who suffer from it and those who live with the people who suffer from it and what they go through. It is an important issue that needs to be understood by the public.

I do have to admit that this was a hard book for me to read, the characters were so distant. I know that angst is compelling but there should be some relief, some comic moments. Humor is always a good way for people to survive torment. It is why there is always humor in a thriller, the audience can only take so much. It would make so much easier for the reader.

I do recommend the book, it is a well done depiction of people who love each other, finding their way.

Book Review;

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Harry Potter, #3)Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
I have to admit this has always been my favorite of the series. I think because of two of the new characters and what they mean to Harry. I also love how Hermione has grown up and she really is becoming her own person. Of course like any preteen she makes major mistakes like taking too many classes, but that just makes you love her more and relate to her more. Poor Harry really goes through the ringer and I appreciate J.K Rowling allows this young man to be competent but make mistakes and be downright confused. I love how he reacts in a certain part when Hermione takes him on a certain trip, (sometimes it is really hard to avoid spoilers.) Ron has always been us to me. He says what the audience would say and reacts the way we do too. It’s hard not to love them. This is the story that you see a glimpse of the adults they will become. I adore Lupin, he is very real to me. Like my best teachers, the ones that always made me think.

Anything else I say would give the game away, but it is my favorite and an exquisite story.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter, #1)Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I re-read this for the first time in a long time. I read the original about a year after it came out, and I loved it and gave to other family members. We were all hooked.

I love the movies very much and they are very faithful but it is texture and depth you can never really transfer to film. It is hard to convey the inner world of the characters. I found in reading it again that you can see how confused Harry is, how innocent and yet how brave with more understanding the books. Also their being quite British, the characters rarely show how they truly feel on the outside, you can see it in their eyes, because they are all wonderful actors, so you feel the depth and pain as you look into their eyes. But in a book, you feel it in your gut, it tears your heart out.

I lost my parents since I first read this book, I am not a child, and I was lucky to have my parents for a good majority of my life so I can’t compare to Harry’s pain. He never really knew his parents at all and slowly he gets to know them through others who did, through out the series that knowledge builds. He loves them even more deeply in the later books, but in this book, all he has ever known is their loss. And the ugly untrue rantings of a jealous sister and her cruel idiotic husband. These two people (“The worst muggles in the world!”) abused this baby for 10 years. He hadn’t known love since his parents died, so it is a miracle that he is full of love, kindness, and thoughtfulness. His parents are a part him despite his cruel upbringing from his horrid Aunt and Uncle. And the abuse he suffered from a spoiled, arrogant, egotistical bully of a cousin.

I love so many the characters first and foremost Harry, Ron and Hermione. I am the most like Hermione Granger I think, but because I am book worm and was always different. Still am. I remember only a few years ago a colleague from work and I went out to lunch. We had time so we went shopping and I picked out a necklace, she tilted her head and said, “It is like you, different.” Left handed compliments…sigh, they are something I learned to read early, so out of the three of them, I think I understand Hermione best.

But my favorite has always been Hagrid. He was just a sweet teddy bear, and I have always adored that kind of character. Sweet, kind, a gentle giant, full of a quiet hard earned wisdom, (though he was not book smart, he was life smart) I just adore him.

An exciting time!

Sherri’s Playhouse presents a very short tiny play called Dowry! It was originally for an under 10 minute play writing contest. But it was so personal and special I decided to do it on Sherri’s Playhouse. It is a very short re-imagining of the founding of my family in the US. It was a very personal project and I am very interested in chatting with my cast about bringing the stories of my Grandma to life; http://tobtr.com/11417347  Then I presented it on  Sherri’s Playhouse a very short tiny play called Dowry ; http://tobtr.com/11422435

Broken like a bird with a broken wing

Even a missing feather

The poor little thing can’t fly

I feel broken

Alone

Unloved

Not able to fly

Death on the Nile (Hercule Poirot, #17)Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I re-read this book recently and I realized how complicated it was. Much more so then any of the televised versions of the book. The characters are not paper cut outs, there is depth here and she has to give a complete picture of what happens to the people who survive this fatal voyage.

I think that is the part I focused on this time, the survivors. What becomes of them. And in a time just before war what might happen to them. It seems such a happy pleasant ending for these survivors, but there are storm clouds brewing and she projects it into the book but very cleverly through characters you might not believe. Not because they are liars or don’t know what they are talking about but because they go on and on about it. I can see that today. The world is so crazy right now, people are worried and they are passionate about it and I don’t blame them. But I have friends, who I truly respect, but they only talk about the problems, when I quietly asked, “What can we do about it?” They reply, “we need to fight it.” I agree, but it is straining to hear them go on and not have one idea in their head on how to fix it. So she uses that to project, so its there, yet you’re not taking it seriously. Its ingenious, really.

Also this time, I really looked at the first victim more closely, she is basically a good person but she had been given everything on a platter all her life and everyone scrambles to jump to do what she says. It has made her grow arrogant and rather full of herself. She has no idea what down to earth means, she has never been exposed to it.

I also believe reading between the lines, that she has always been something of beau snatcher. Her ex-friend, now arch enemy basically states she would do what she did and that it had always been a part of the plan. An intricate part of the plan, if she does not steal her fiancee then the plan would not work.

Also poor Rosalie, she has this tough life with her mother, then she falls for an unavailable man. I mean really, it takes Poirot to point out to him that he loves her. I hope that one works out for her, but I am not sure, he does not seem to be able to think for himself. I always hope for lovers.

Anyway, these are my theories and ideas about the plot. On my I don’t know how many re-reads. I hope it gives you some pause to say, hmmm, I didn’t think of that. 🙂

Poetry;

Spirit of a Dandelion Petal

— Sherri Rabinowitz

Such a pretty flower,

It looks like any other,

But when one blows gently,

It flies apart, sensationally!

You want to cry,

It is a tragedy, but no, as you see the petals part,

you give an amazed start!

Because each petal is itself,

an individual,

whole and complete,

a dream like spirit that

flies its own path.

Each petal is an angel of beauty,

Fluttering in its own very short flight,

to freedom.

Absent in the SpringAbsent in the Spring by Mary Westmacott
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is a very good book, very gripping. I am not sure why this book is under the category of romance, they are gripping, searing personal dramas. Agatha ripped the facade that this woman erected around herself, it is done slowly, plotted very naturally. It so gripping I could not stop reading it, even though it is very disturbing. The desert in the story reminds me of a police integration room with the spotlight centered on the suspect. Except there is no suspect, just a human being stripped bare to find her own inner core. This does not really give any plot points away, it is just my reaction to it, (other then effect of the desert on her,) you need read it to find out what she finds out and how she reacts to it. It certainly made me cry and react. I wonder it if it will do the same to you?

Dorothy L. Sayers: The Complete StoriesDorothy L. Sayers: The Complete Stories by Dorothy L. Sayers
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I enjoyed re-reading this delightful collection.

Of course is The Lord Peter Wimsey stories that I had never read before the first time I read it and the wonderful stories of married life of Harriet and Peter. As always Peter solves all the various puzzles with aplomb.

I had never even heard of the Montague Egg stories. They are adorable. Egg is a traveling wine and spirits salesman who runs into all sorts of mysteries mysteries as he makes his sales calls. “The salesman who will use his brains will spare himself a world of pains,” and with this book he solves very puzzling mysteries.

I’m not really that big a fan of the last group of stories of stand alones, they’re much darker than the Wimseys and the Eggs and they are not my cup of tea but they are very well written of course.

I really like Sayers style, the puzzles are always fun and the humor is full of wit and fun. Great read!

Cards on the Table (Hercule Poirot, #15)Cards on the Table by Agatha Christie

This is another one of those times when the episodes with David Suchet are so strong in my mind, that I think I have read the book, but I didn’t. I was reading a biography of Agatha Christie and when they were speaking of certain plot points in Cards On The Table, I realized that, A. they changed the plot for the TV show and B. I never read it.

I really enjoyed it on several levels. First it was fun to meet the four sleuths in their introductions. The four sleuths in the novel, whom I have enjoyed for many years but it was interesting to read the way she described them for the very first time. And the characters of the four suspects which were pretty much the same, except that they weren’t…I am being circumspect because I don’t want to give too much away, but there are more killings in this book then in the TV show and one of the killings was done in a way I really didn’t expect at all.

Excellent book, I really highly recommend it. It is a lot of fun to watch the other sleuths as opposed to Poirot. As he uses misdirection and psychology to catch the killer.

The Mousetrap and Other PlaysThe Mousetrap and Other Plays by Agatha Christie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I had only read one of the Agatha Christie plays that she had adapted for the stage and that was because I was in it; Murder on the Nile. I was so excited to be in the play and I had the script of just that play, so I had no idea how many of her plays she herself had adapted. The first thing I noticed when I read it, and I was stunned by it, is that she took out Hercule Poirot. She replaced him with Canon Pennyfather from the novel; At Bertram’s Hotel. Because the Cannon was a rather dithering old man very different from the one in the play I was very startled by this, but they were her characters so I figured she could do what she wanted. This play is not in this edition that is why I felt I could talk about it a bit more since I am not giving away anything in the plot so no spoilers here.

This is book is a masterclass on adaption, she gets all the important information in these plays but it is subtly changed to be more suitable for stage. And there are changes, a lot of them, so hold on to your hats if you read the novels.

The three plays I liked best were;  (which is the book; Five Little Pigs.) All the plays in this collection are excellent but these are the plays and novels that touched me most.

The Hollow has the least changes, and my favorites are still Midge and Edward, I am sorry but the rest are really hard for me to really relate to, I just love these two. They are adorable. The detective in it is Inspector Colquohoun with the help of Sergeant Penny who take over the duties of the famous Belgian sleuth they replaced. The mystery is well done, but it is changed so it will take place in one or two rooms. Excellent construction and she somehow gets all the really tense bits in despite the very confined area because of it being on the stage.

The second one is Go Back To Murder, The daughter of Caroline and Amyas is Carla, like the novel not Lucy like the film. It follows the line of the novel except in the play she aided by Justin Fogg (who I find utterly adorable), son of the lawyer who led Caroline Crale’s defense. This play is pretty much the same, but I just love the relationship between Justin and Carla, it is lovely to watch it develop. It is part of Christie’s brilliance I believe that she can create a believable relationship so quickly. They are at odds in the beginning and totally a unit by the end of the play. Again the staging is fascinating, all of Christie’s ideas to use the lighting in order to show the different locations and how the actors should look in the past and in the future. Brilliantly crafted, I can see why she enjoyed writing plays so much, she was really wonderful at it.

And last but not least is Towards Zero, she actually takes out my favorite character, I was disappointed by that but it is a really wonderful play. Again it is pretty much the same plot this time with the same detective, Inspector Battle, the same as the book really but I really just enjoyed the artistry of the transfer to stage she used. Still catching the killer once again in a confined area of the stage. Rather brilliantly managed.

If you’re a playwright and novelist this is the book for you, to learn to adapt your work. If you’re an actor or just appreciate a wonderful play its fascinating. If your Christie fan it is worth it, just to see the changes and the things she does not change. A little bit for everyone!

Unfinished PortraitUnfinished Portrait by Mary Westmacott
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was such a difficult story to read because I knew it was based on Agatha Christie herself, her own life and feelings. And how Archie Christie truly hurt her so deeply in the end, at the worst time he could possible do it. Also how he just seemed to be blind to anything but his own thoughts and feelings. It really tore at my heart.

There is a strange connection between “Unfinished Portrait”, a Harley Quin short story called; “Man from The Sea” and “Towards Zero. ” I read them one after another. They all have a suicide attempt that is stopped, in two of the stories the place for it is exactly the same and in two of the stories, the same philosophy against suicide is the same. Has anyone else pondered this? I never read it in an article or a book about Christie.

I thought it very interesting too, that she incorporated her own nightmare of the gun man, and the interesting twist she gave it. I will not add any spoilers to this review but if you want to know how Agatha Christie felt about what happened to her in 1926, this is the book to read.
